Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Sends Book Sales Soaring as Spotify Audiobook Listens Explode by Insane Percentage

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has become much more than just a major Hollywood release. The epic adventure film has turned into a worldwide event, bringing new attention to Homer’s nearly 3,000-year-old story and introducing the classic tale to a new generation of fans.

The movie opened with huge numbers, earning $264.1 million worldwide during its first weekend and becoming one of the biggest launches of Nolan’s career. Starring Matt Damon as Odysseus, the film follows the legendary Greek hero as he attempts to return home after the Trojan War, facing mythical creatures, dangerous gods and impossible challenges along the way.

The film also stars Anne Hathaway as Penelope and Tom Holland as Telemachus, with the story focusing on Odysseus’ long journey back to Ithaca while his family deals with threats from powerful suitors trying to take over his kingdom.

The success of Nolan’s adaptation has now created a surprising boost for the original source material. According to Circana BookScan data, sales of all editions of Homer’s The Odyssey have increased by 76% this year as more people look to experience the story that inspired the blockbuster movie.

The popularity has not only affected physical book sales. Spotify has revealed that audiobook listening for The Odyssey has also seen a massive increase following the movie’s release.

According to Spotify, audiobook listens for The Odyssey jumped by more than 500% on July 17, the same day Nolan’s film arrived in theaters. The streaming platform also reported that listening numbers had already started rising before the movie premiered, increasing by more than 240% in June.

After the film’s release, Spotify says listens are currently on track to increase by around 680% compared to previous levels. Across 91 different audiobook editions available in 10 languages, The Odyssey has now been played for the equivalent of more than 43 years of nonstop listening.

The audiobook revival has also attracted a younger audience. Spotify data shows that 36% of listeners are from Generation Z, while 45% are Millennials. The platform also found that men make up 63% of total listeners for The Odyssey audiobook.

Lena Yang, Senior Editor for Audiobooks at Spotify, told Variety that the renewed interest shows how classic stories can find new audiences through modern formats.

“It’s always exciting to see beloved classics find new audiences,” Yang said. “Audiobooks offer a fresh way to experience timeless tales, and it’s especially rewarding to see listeners returning to ‘The Odyssey’ in such a meaningful way.”

Nolan’s film has also created unusual levels of excitement among moviegoers. Demand for premium screenings, especially IMAX 70mm presentations, has been so high that some fans have traveled long distances just to experience the film in its intended format.
