For years, Netflix denied that The Boroughs was just Stranger Things in a retirement home. Now, the Duffer Brothers are finally embracing the comparison. At Netflix’s Next on Netflix 2025 event, the Duffers confirmed that their upcoming show The Boroughs has a lot in common with their hit series.

Of the two projects, The Boroughs probably shares the most DNA with Stranger Things because it’s about a group of misfits who fight an otherworldly evil,’ Matt Duffer said. But this time, the main characters aren’t kids—they’re senior citizens. ‘They ride golf carts, not bikes.’

Created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, The Boroughs takes place in a peaceful-looking retirement community in the New Mexico desert. The residents soon discover that something sinister is trying to steal what they have the least of—time.

The show features an impressive cast, including Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Bill Pullman, Denis O’Hare, Clarke Peters, Jena Malone, Carlos Miranda, Rafael Casal, Ed Begley Jr., and Jane Kaczmarek.

The Duffers have already watched the first three episodes and say the show is ‘fun, scary, and touching.’ They’re excited for everyone to see it when it premieres in 2026.

Their second project, Something Very Bad is Going to Happen, is a different kind of horror. Created by Haley Z. Boston, the show follows a couple during the stressful week leading up to their wedding. Ross Duffer hinted that it dives into the fear and anxiety that come with making a lifelong commitment. ‘The title is accurate. Bad things do happen.’

Boston serves as both showrunner and executive producer at just 29 years old. The series stars Camila Morrone and Adam DiMarco and is directed by Weronika Tofilska, known for Baby Reindeer.

Both shows arrive in 2026, while Stranger Things will return for its final season in late 2025. The Duffers didn’t share much about the last chapter, but they teased that it will be ‘like eight blockbuster movies.’
