FX Is Turning ‘Far Cry’ Into a Live-Action TV Series – Here’s What We Know
FX is officially bringing Ubisoft’s Far Cry video game franchise to life with a live-action series, Variety reports.
The show is being developed by Noah Hawley and Rob McElhenney, with McElhenney also set to star. In the U.S., the series will stream on Hulu, while international viewers can watch it on Disney+.
The show will follow an anthology format, similar to the games. Each season will feature a new cast and a different setting. Details about the plot are still being kept secret. McElhenney, who co-created the series, said he’s thrilled to work on the project.
“Getting to work alongside Noah Hawley is a dream realized,” he said. “Ubisoft has been remarkably generous, entrusting us with one of the most iconic video-game worlds ever created. And through it all, my FX family continues to lift me up with their constant belief and support.”
This project also marks a reunion between McElhenney and Ubisoft. He previously co-created and starred in Apple TV’s Mythic Quest, which Ubisoft Film & Television helped produce.
Hawley highlighted the appeal of adapting Far Cry for television. “What I love about the ‘Far Cry’ game franchise is it’s an anthology. Each game is a variation of a theme, the same way each season of ‘Fargo’ is a variation on a theme,” he said.
“To create a big action show that can change from year to year, while always exploring the nature of humanity through this complex and chaotic lens is a dream come true. I’m excited to partner with Rob and bring our shared irreverent, ambitious sensibility to the screen.”
This will be the first live-action Far Cry adaptation for TV. The games were previously adapted into a 2008 direct-to-video movie directed by Uwe Boll. Netflix also released the animated series Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix in 2023, which drew inspiration from Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon.
Far Cry is a long-running first-person shooter franchise published by Ubisoft. The first game, released in 2004, was developed by Crytek to showcase their CryEngine software. Ubisoft later acquired the franchise, with development mostly handled by Ubisoft Montreal.
Over the years, the series has expanded to six mainline games, a standalone expansion, and multiple spin-offs. While each game shares similar themes—surviving in wilderness environments, fighting despots, and facing dangerous wildlife—there’s no shared storyline between them.
The games are known for their open-world design, single-player campaigns, co-op modes in later entries, and competitive multiplayer options. They have received praise for their gameplay and memorable villains, though some critics note a lack of innovation. Despite this, the franchise has been a commercial success.
