Netflix Announces: Gina Carano To Make a Return Facing Ronda Rousey in Blockbuster MMA Showdown

Netflix is set to make its MMA debut with a blockbuster fight between Gina Carano and Ronda Rousey. The fight will take place on Saturday, May 16, at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles and will stream live exclusively on Netflix. The rest of the fight card has not yet been announced.

The two MMA legends will compete as featherweights, fighting at 145 pounds under the Unified Rules of MMA. The match will be five five-minute rounds with four-ounce gloves. Unlike the UFC, the fight will happen inside a hexagon cage, giving the event its own unique look.

This marks Netflix’s first-ever foray into mixed martial arts, and it is also Most Valuable Promotions’ (MVP) debut in MMA. MVP, co-founded by Jake Paul, previously gained fame producing Netflix-streamed boxing matches.

Rousey shared her excitement about the fight, saying, “Been waiting so long to announce this: Me and Gina Carano are gonna throw down in the biggest super fight in women’s combat sport history! And we’re partnering with the fighter-first promotion MVP as well as the biggest and baddest streamer on the planet Netflix. This is for all MMA fans past, present and future. More to come… much more.”

Carano, who gained mainstream attention as an actress and former MMA fighter, commented on the matchup.

She recalled how Rousey personally asked for this fight: “Ronda came to me and said there is only one person she would make a comeback for and it has been her dream to make this fight happen between us. She thanked me for opening up doors for her in her career and was respectful in asking for this fight to happen. This is an honor. I believe I will walk out of this fight with the win and I anticipate it will not come easy, which I welcome. This is as much for Ronda and me as it is for the fans and mixed martial arts community. What a time to be alive.”

Fans will also remember that Carano’s departure from The Mandalorian five years ago made headlines due to her controversial social media posts.
