The budget for the upcoming superhero movie Supergirl has been revealed.

Forbes reports that the film cost $200 million to make. For comparison, the Superman movie had a production budget of $225 million. Superman earned over $616 million worldwide and is expected to have made about $125 million in profit, according to Variety.

Supergirl is set to be the second film in the new DC Universe. The movie is directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira. Milly Alcock stars as Kara Zor-El, the title character, with Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, and Emily Beecham in supporting roles. James Gunn and Peter Safran of DC Studios are producing the film.

The story follows Supergirl as she travels across the galaxy with her dog Krypto. Along the way, she meets a young girl named Ruthye Marye Knoll. A tragedy occurs that sends her on a “murderous quest for revenge.”

Plans for a Supergirl movie have been in the works since 2018, when the character was first set to appear in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). She was introduced on screen in 2023’s The Flash, played by Sasha Calle. After Gunn and Safran took over as co-CEOs of DC Studios in 2022, the project was reworked. In 2023, a new film based on the comic series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow was announced. Nogueira was hired to write the script, and Alcock was cast in early 2024.

Filming ran from January to May of this year in London, Scotland, and at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden.

Supergirl is scheduled to hit theaters in the United States on June 26, 2026. It will be part of the DCU’s first chapter, called Gods and Monsters.
