‘9-1-1’ Season 10 Trailer Sends the 118 Into Its Hottest Emergency Yet

‘9-1-1‘ has never been shy about opening a season with a disaster big enough to make viewers rethink their local emergency plans. The Season 9 premiere kicked off with a meteor shower and sent LAPD’s Athena Grant (Angela Bassett) and firefighter Hen Wilson (Aisha Hinds) into space. Topping that was always going to be a tall order.

The hit procedural is marking its 10th season this fall on ABC. It will premiere Thursday, Oct. 15, at 8 p.m. ET, and it is the show’s first season since replacing Peter Krause’s Captain Bobby Nash. New episodes will also land on Hulu the day after they air.

Now the first full trailer has arrived, and it goes much bigger than a space mission.

The footage starts with a caller who says they are trapped in a river of lava. Emergency vehicles then race toward a volcano in the middle of the city as ash and lava spew out and form the numbers 9-1-1 on the ground, with the B-52s’ “Lava” playing in the background.

The stakes get personal fast, because Athena is in trouble. The trailer opens with her calling out to someone in danger with a flashlight in hand, and her daughter May explains over the phone that Athena crawled through a hole underground. LAFD heads below to find her, with her son Harry shouting for her, and the trailer ends with May in tears and Buck calling out for survivors.

The 118 has plenty to deal with above ground, too. Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) points out that Los Angeles has no protocol for a volcano. The trailer also shows a risky rescue involving a basket lowered from a ladder, Eddie (Ryan Guzman) rescuing a dog, and firefighters jumping between cars to avoid touching the lava-covered ground.

The volcano didn’t come out of nowhere. Showrunner Tim Minear told Entertainment Weekly that the season’s first disaster seems like a sinkhole at first and then turns into something else entirely. He said the idea is inspired by the 1997 disaster film ‘Volcano’. Minear also describes the multi-episode crisis as quite catastrophic for property values, the general public and the Station 118 heroes.

The premiere has a fitting title. “That Sinking Feeling” has the 118 facing a city-wide emergency while Athena tackles a new case as a detective and May gains confidence in her new job. Athena is getting used to her new partner, Det. Newell (Rick Otto), while Buck navigates his new role as a foster father.

Fans have noticed, with the DiscussingFilm post already sitting at 6.8K likes and 316.3K views at the time of the screenshot. Judging by the footage, the series that once sent its heroes to space has found another way to push its disaster formula, and the crossover of personal drama and natural catastrophe looks as ambitious as ever.

Will the 118 survive LA’s volcanic nightmare?
