Christian Bale Remembers Funny Encounter with Donald Trump on ‘Batman’ Set
Christian Bale previously opened up about a memorable and amusing encounter he had with Donald Trump while filming The Dark Knight Rises in 2011.
At the time, Bale was in full costume as Bruce Wayne, the billionaire alter ego of Batman, for Christopher Nolan’s final installment of the Dark Knight Trilogy.
The filming took the cast to New York City, where some scenes were shot in the lobby of Trump Tower.
This location was used as the main entrance to Wayne Enterprises in the film. During the shoot, Trump invited Bale up to his office, which led to a humorous misunderstanding.
Speaking to Variety in 2018, Bale recalled the interaction. “I met him, one time,” he said. “We were filming on ‘Batman’ in Trump Tower and he said, ‘Come on up to the office.'” Bale explained that Trump seemed to believe he was actually Bruce Wayne.
“I think he thought I was Bruce Wayne,” Bale joked. “Because I was dressed as Bruce Wayne. So he talked to me like I was Bruce Wayne and I just went along with it, really. It was quite entertaining.”
He also reflected on the surprising future of the encounter, noting he had no idea Trump would one day consider running for president.
“I had no idea at the time that he would think about running for president,” Bale said. The story highlights a lighthearted moment behind the scenes of a major film, showing how unexpected real-life interactions can mix with movie-making.
The Dark Knight Rises was part of a trilogy that began with Batman Begins in 2005 and continued with The Dark Knight in 2008. The films were set in Gotham City but were filmed in multiple locations around the world. Bale’s encounter at Trump Tower stands out as a unique behind-the-scenes story from the production.
Bale’s recounting also shows his sense of humor and his ability to handle unusual situations on set. He played along with the mix-up, adding a memorable anecdote to the lore of the Dark Knight films.
