Clayface is a body horror story centered on an actor whose face is disfigured by a gangster. In a desperate move, he turns to a scientist, played by Naomi Ackie, who transforms his body into clay.
Tom Rhys Harries stars as Clayface, while Eddie Marsan has joined the cast in an undisclosed role. The Matt Hagen version of the character is also expected to appear in the film.
The movie is directed by James Watkins, with a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini.
Flanagan had originally pitched the idea as a horror take on Clayface for the DC Extended Universe, but scheduling conflicts prevented him from directing. The project was later confirmed as part of the new DC Universe (DCU), the successor to the DCEU, in December 2024. Flanagan remains involved as a writer and producer.
Filming began on August 31, in Liverpool, England, under the working title Corinthians. Location shoots have included Derby Square, which doubled as Gotham Hospital, and North John Street, transformed into the Gotham Docks. Gotham-themed vehicles were stored at the former Merseyside Police headquarters. Soundstage work is being done at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden. Rob Hardy, who worked on the DCU film Supergirl (2026), is the cinematographer.
Producers include James Gunn and Peter Safran of DC Studios, alongside Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris. The film will be part of DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters and is scheduled for release in the United States on September 11, 2026.
