Acting Legend Returns at 92 to Star in Vin Diesel’s Next Film

Michael Caine is reportedly coming out of retirement to star in the upcoming sequel to The Last Witch Hunter, Variety reports. The 92-year-old acting legend is expected to reprise his role as Dolan, the priest who assists Vin Diesel’s character Kaulder in fighting dark magic.

The original Last Witch Hunter was released in 2015. It told the story of Kaulder, an immortal witch hunter, trying to stop a plague created by a witch queen.

While the movie earned $147 million at the box office, critics were largely unimpressed. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds an 18% rating, and Metacritic scored it 34 out of 100. Audience responses were better, with CinemaScore giving it a B−.

Some reviewers found it entertaining despite its flaws. Alison Willmore of BuzzFeed News called it “terrible. It is fabulously entertaining,” and Simon Abrams from RogerEbert.com praised Diesel as “especially charming.”

Caine retired from acting in 2023 at the age of 90 after his final film, The Great Escaper. At the time, he told BBC Radio 4’s Today show, “I’ve figured, I’ve had a picture where I’ve played the lead and it’s got incredible reviews. The only parts I’m likely to get now are old men, 90-year-old men, maybe 85. And I thought, ‘Well, I might as well leave with all this — I’ve got wonderful reviews. What have I got to do to beat this?’”

The sequel is being fast-tracked through development at Lionsgate and Diesel’s production company, One Race Films. While a deal for Caine has not been finalized, he is expected to return alongside Diesel.

This new project will mark Caine’s first film since retiring and will reunite him with Diesel in a fantasy-action adventure. Fans will see him return to the screen in a role he first played nearly a decade ago.
