Amazon’s ‘Succession’-Style Drama Lands Season 2!
Amazon Prime Video has confirmed that the mystery drama series “We Were Liars” will return for a second season, Variety reports.
The first season, adapted from E. Lockhart’s novel, premiered in June and quickly attracted viewers with its mix of family drama and suspense.
The story centers on Cadence Sinclair Eastman and her close group of friends, known as the Liars. They spend summers on Cadence’s grandfather’s private island in New England. The Sinclairs are a wealthy, influential family, but a tragic accident turns Cadence’s life upside down and leaves everyone with secrets to hide.
Series creators Julie Plec and Carina Adly Mackenzie expressed their excitement about continuing the show. “We loved making this show with so many spectacular humans. The fan response was truly special. There are still plenty of secrets buried on Beechwood Island and we can’t wait to keep digging them up,” they said.
The first season featured Emily Alyn Lind as Cadence, along with Shubham Maheshwari, Esther McGregor, Joseph Zada, Caitlin FitzGerald, Mamie Gummer, Candice King, Rahul Kohli, and David Morse in supporting roles.
Author E. Lockhart shared that the second season will include surprises for both readers and viewers. “MacKenzie and Plec have big, big plans for Season Two, including everything readers of my books are dying to see onscreen — and a lot of surprises as well,” she said.
Rotten Tomatoes gave the show a 60% approval rating, noting that it offers engaging family drama mixed with suspense. Metacritic scored it 53 out of 100, showing mixed reviews. Some critics compared it to other popular drama series.
Kylie Northover from The Age described it as “essentially a junior Succession, but there’s enough adult soapiness for We Were Liars to appeal to a broad audience.” Lauren Thoman of TheWrap also praised its twisty, summer-melodrama style.

Erin Underhill, president of Universal Television, praised the show’s team. “The season two renewal of ‘We Were Liars’ is yet another testament to Julie and this cast and crew’s extraordinary talent. This series, which Julie and Carina crafted so beautifully from E. Lockhart’s beloved books, absolutely deserves a deeper dive. And we’re grateful to Amazon MGM for their collaboration and partnership,” she said.
The series’ renewal means fans can look forward to more secrets, drama, and twists on Beechwood Island.
