Nicole Kidman Reveals Her Important On-Set Rule: “If You Make Me, I Will, But I Prefer Not To”

Nicole Kidman has shared her personal rules for staying fully in character while filming, saying that discipline is key to her long-term success.

In an interview with Variety, the actress explained that once she is in character, she tries not to break that focus for anyone.

“I don’t like to break where I am,” Kidman said. “It’s almost a trance. If the director’s speaking off camera, I can hear it, but I wouldn’t come out of character – people are like, ‘She’s a little crazy.’ I don’t like the monitor. But someone like Baz Luhrmann loves you to look. If you make me, I will, but my preference is not to.”

Kidman used her work with director Baz Luhrmann on Moulin Rouge! as an example. Despite having very different styles, they were able to collaborate successfully, and Kidman earned her first Best Actress Oscar nomination for her role as the glamorous nightclub singer Satine.

She explained that even years later, she continues to use this technique. On the Amazon Prime series Nine Perfect Strangers, Kidman reportedly stayed so immersed in her character that she refused to respond to her own name on set.

She was playing a Russian businesswoman who drugs her clients with a psychoactive substance, showing how deeply she commits to the role.
