In the early 1990s, Jim Carrey was unstoppable, starring in hits like Dumb and Dumber, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, and The Mask all within the same year.

One of his biggest surprises was The Mask, where Carrey’s character, Stanley Ipkiss, gains superpowers and rescues a nightclub singer played by Cameron Diaz from dangerous gangsters.

In 1995, Carrey was nominated for five MTV Movie Awards and even competed against himself in some categories.

The show, known for its outrageous moments, was perfect for unusual awards like Best Kiss. Cameron Diaz was chosen to present the award, alongside musician Chris Isaak, who was still popular from his 1989 hit Wicked Game.

According to reports, Isaak made the night unforgettable for all the wrong reasons. While on stage, he tried to kiss Diaz without her consent. “Come here, baby,” Isaak reportedly said, grabbing Diaz’s wrist, neck, and hair.

Diaz pushed him away and replied, “On the director’s say-so!” to emphasize that any kissing on stage was supposed to be consensual. Despite her protests, Isaak eventually forced a kiss. Diaz’s reaction showed clear anger and discomfort, making it obvious that boundaries were being crossed.

When Carrey and Lauren Holly were announced as the winners for Best Kiss, Carrey decided to step in. As Holly went to accept the trophy, Carrey grabbed Isaak and gave him a playful but forceful kiss, turning the tables on the musician.

The moment was reminiscent of Carrey’s Mask persona, putting someone in their place for crossing a line. Isaak, embarrassed, wiped his mouth and quickly left the stage.

This incident remains one of the more shocking moments in MTV Movie Awards history, remembered not for the show’s glitz but for the way personal boundaries were defended and crossed on live television.

Jim Carrey’s quick thinking showed why he was such a dominant presence in comedy at the time. He turned a disturbing moment into a lesson about respect and boundaries, all while keeping the audience entertained. What do you think about how Carrey handled the situation?
