Jason Universe Teases Big Surprises as ‘Friday the 13th’ Franchise Gears Up for Expansion

Jason Voorhees is officially back, and the Jason Universe team is making it clear that his story is far from over.

Earlier this year, the horror icon returned with the short film Sweet Revenge, and fans can also look forward to the upcoming TV series Crystal Lake, set to debut next year.

Now, the team is hinting at even bigger projects. Robbie Barsamian, one of the people behind Jason Universe, recently confirmed in SFX Magazine (via GamesRadar) that a new movie and a video game are in the works.

“We are actively working on a new movie – which will be the 13th in the franchise – as well as a new video game,” he said. Barsamian also teased that Jason will appear “in other unexpected ways,” adding, “We’re exploring a variety of opportunities, but consistently staying focused on authenticity.”

The TV series Crystal Lake has had a long road to production. It was first announced in 2022 as a prequel series and was initially set to be led by Bryan Fuller and Victor Miller. After Fuller left the project, Brad Caleb Kane was brought on as the new showrunner in 2024.

Production is expected to start in Australia at the end of 2024, with a planned release around Halloween. Linda Cardellini has been cast as Pamela Voorhees, reprising the role of Jason’s mother for the first time in decades, while Adrienne King, known for playing Alice Hardy in the original 1980 film, will also appear.

On the movie front, Jason Universe has plans for a new feature, though fans may have to wait a bit. In the past, studios were hesitant to greenlight a horror reboot, but Barsamian’s recent comments suggest things are moving forward.

He confirmed that both a new film and a video game are actively being developed, keeping the franchise alive in multiple forms.

With a short film, a TV series, a new movie, and a video game in development, it’s clear that Jason Voorhees is back in a big way. The Jason Universe team seems determined to expand the franchise while staying true to the character’s legacy.
