The world of Minecraft is getting bigger. Legendary and Warner Bros. have confirmed that a sequel to A Minecraft Movie is officially in the works and will arrive in theaters on July 23, 2027.

The news was shared by the official Minecraft social media account, which posted a teaser image with the caption, “Building terrain. See you in theaters July 23 2027.”

The announcement comes after the first Minecraft movie became a massive box office success earlier this year.

The film earned nearly $958 million worldwide, making it the second-highest-grossing movie of the year. In the United States and Canada, it brought in $423.9 million, while international audiences added another $533.9 million.

Jared Hess, who directed the first film, will return for the sequel. He will also co-write the screenplay with Chris Galletta. The movie’s producers include Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Roy Lee, Eric McLeod, Kayleen Walters, Torfi Frans Ólafsson, and Jason Momoa, who also starred in the original.

While A Minecraft Movie became a box office hit, critics were more divided. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 48% score based on 190 reviews, with the site saying it offers “a colorful sandbox for Jack Black and Jason Momoa to amusingly romp around in a story curiously constructed from conventional building blocks.”

The movie also inspired a viral fan movement that took over social media, especially on TikTok. Some audiences became known for wild theater reactions during screenings, shouting famous lines from the film like “Chicken jockey!” and “Flint and steel!”

Videos spread of moviegoers dancing, cheering, and even throwing popcorn during those moments. One viral incident showed a group bringing a live chicken into a Utah theater, while others caused chaos with smoke bombs and fire extinguishers. The trend later spread beyond the U.S., reaching audiences in Australia and South Africa.

With the first film’s massive success and the online craze it sparked, expectations are high for the sequel. Warner Bros. and Legendary are clearly betting that Minecraft fans will return to theaters for another round of blocky adventure.
