Scarlett Johansson Wants to Play Iconic Disney Villain in the Upcoming Live-Action Adaptation
Disney is moving forward with its live-action version of Tangled after putting the project on hold earlier this year. Scarlett Johansson is reportedly being considered for the role of Mother Gothel, the story’s iconic villain.
Production was paused following the disappointing box office results of Disney’s Snow White earlier this year.
However, the studio saw a major rebound with its Lilo & Stitch remake, which earned over $1 billion globally. This success has given Disney the confidence to continue with the Tangled adaptation, according to reports.
The film will retell the story of Rapunzel, the long-haired princess from the Brothers Grimm tale, and is inspired by Disney’s 2010 animated version.
Michael Gracey, who directed The Greatest Showman, is still in talks to direct the new movie, with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson attached to write the script. Other casting decisions have not yet been announced.
Plans for a live-action Tangled have been in development for several years. Back in 2020, Screen Rant reported that Disney was developing a live-action Rapunzel movie, though no sequel to the animated film was being planned at the time.
By December 2024, it was officially confirmed that Michael Gracey and Jennifer Kaytin Robinson were attached to the project. Production was then halted in April 2025 due to the poor performance of Snow White, but the recent success of Lilo & Stitch has revived interest.
If Johansson takes on the role, it would be a high-profile casting choice for one of Disney’s most famous villains. Mother Gothel is known for her cunning personality and obsession with youth, which could make her a compelling character in the hands of a talented actress.
