Iconic ‘Ninja Gaiden’ and ‘Dead or Alive’ Game Designer Passes Away at 58
Tomonobu Itagaki, the renowned Japanese video game designer behind iconic titles like Ninja Gaiden and the Dead or Alive series, has passed away at the age of 58. His death was announced on October 16 via a post on his official Facebook page.
“Itagaki Tomonobu is no longer in this world,” the message, translated from Japanese, read. “My life has been a series of battles. I kept winning. I’m proud to say that I followed my beliefs and fought to the end. I have no regrets. However, I’m filled with regret that I wasn’t able to deliver a new work to all my fans. I’m sorry.”
The post was described as being prepared by Itagaki himself as his final words.
Itagaki became one of Japan’s most influential game developers in the 2000s. He gained fame for redefining action gameplay with the release of Ninja Gaiden on the original Xbox in 2004, which was celebrated for its fast-paced combat, challenging difficulty, and cinematic presentation.
He also created the Dead or Alive fighting game franchise, which became known for its technical depth, fluid combat, and competitive appeal.
His style was bold and often controversial, with a focus on player skill, tight combat mechanics, and highly polished character designs.
These qualities made him one of the most recognizable figures in the gaming world. Itagaki’s direct personality and outspoken opinions often drew attention in interviews and industry events, further cementing his reputation as a maverick designer.
After leaving Tecmo in 2008, Itagaki founded Valhalla Game Studios. The studio released Devil’s Third in 2015, a title that blended shooting and melee combat in a distinctive but polarizing style.
In 2021, he launched Itagaki Games, signaling a desire to return to full-time game development, though the company officially dissolved in 2024 before releasing a new major project.
Itagaki’s contributions extended beyond just games. He influenced combat design and action mechanics across multiple franchises, inspiring a generation of designers and players alike. His work is remembered for its intensity, precision, and for pushing the boundaries of what action games could achieve.
As of now, no further details about the cause of his death have been made public.
