The terrifying world of Five Nights at Freddy’s is coming back to the big screen. Universal Pictures has released a new trailer for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2023 horror hit.

The new movie, based on Scott Cawthon’s popular video game series, will continue the chilling story that began with the first film.

Directed by Emma Tammi and written by Cawthon, the sequel picks up one year after the events of the first movie. The story follows Abby Schmidt, played by Piper Rubio, as she sneaks out to revisit her old animatronic friends at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. What starts as a simple visit turns into something far darker as the secrets behind Freddy’s origin begin to surface.

The film brings back familiar faces from the first installment. Josh Hutcherson returns as Mike Schmidt, a former security guard still haunted by his past.

Elizabeth Lail is back as Vanessa Shelly, a police officer and the daughter of the twisted William Afton, who is once again portrayed by Matthew Lillard. Abby, Mike’s younger sister, also returns, playing a major role in uncovering the restaurant’s dark truth.

New cast members joining the franchise include Skeet Ulrich, Wayne Knight, Mckenna Grace, Teo Briones, and Freddy Carter. Voice actors Kellen Goff, Megan Fox, and Matthew “MatPat” Patrick lend their voices to the animatronic characters Toy Freddy, Toy Chica, and Toy Bonnie.

Production on the film began in November 2024 and wrapped up in February, according to Blumhouse Productions. Jason Blum and Scott Cawthon are once again producing the project. Cawthon had hinted years ago that a sequel would depend on the success of the first movie.

In August 2018, he said a second film could happen if fans showed enough support. After the first movie’s huge success, actor Josh Hutcherson confirmed early in 2024 that the sequel was in the works, with Blumhouse officially announcing it a few months later.

The newly released trailer gives fans their first look at the eerie setting and returning characters, promising another round of jump scares, dark secrets, and animatronic horror. The teaser quickly spread online, with fans praising its tone and atmosphere while speculating about what new horrors await inside Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 will hit theaters in the United States on December 5.
