Netflix and Sony are teaming up again for a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters, the hit animated musical that took the world by storm earlier this year. According to TheWrap, the follow-up film is now in the works and is expected to hit Netflix in 2029.

Directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, who led the first movie, have officially signed on to return. The original KPop Demon Hunters premiered on Netflix in June and quickly became the platform’s biggest film ever, reaching over 325 million views in just three months.

Set in Seoul, the film follows three K-pop idols who use their music to fight demons threatening the city. Its mix of high-energy songs, stylish animation, and Korean pop culture made it a global sensation. The soundtrack dominated streaming platforms, and fans around the world praised its catchy tunes and heartwarming story.

In earlier interviews, the directors hinted at wanting to expand the story. Maggie Kang told Screen Rant that “there are a lot of pockets that we can explore,” mentioning possible backstories for characters like Mira and Zoey. Chris Appelhans also told People that “there are so many unanswered questions, in a good way, and so many avenues that could be their own story.”

Following the movie’s success, TheWrap reported that Netflix began exploring multiple spin-off ideas, including more sequels, a TV series, a short film, and even a stage musical. Netflix Films chairman Dan Lin said in a statement to Newsweek that the company is “excited to explore what could be the next adventure for Huntr/x. KPop Demon Hunters’ success comes from its original, fresh story, so if we do embark on a sequel, we want to make sure that any future stories retain the flair and uniqueness of the first film.”

Sony and Netflix have been negotiating the details for several months. In August, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that both studios had reached an agreement to move forward, with Sony producing and Netflix handling the release.

The sequel is set for a 2029 premiere, giving the creative team plenty of time to develop the next chapter in the world of KPop Demon Hunters. Meanwhile, fans can also look forward to Debut: A KPop Demon Hunters Story, a short film from Sony’s LENS mentorship program that has already been rated PG by the MPA.

With its mix of K-pop, fantasy, and heart, KPop Demon Hunters became more than just a movie, it became a cultural moment. Now, fans just have to wait a few years to see where the story goes next.
