Guillermo del Toro recently sat down with Konbini Video, a popular French video platform, and shared his thoughts on James Cameron’s “Avatar” films.

According to the video, uploaded yesterday, del Toro has seen all three movies, including the upcoming third installment, “Avatar: Fire and Ash.”

“I’ve seen the three Avatars. They are absolute masterpieces. I know where it’s going and I think it’s going to surprise a lot of people […] I can’t say anything about [the third] but I can say there are very few Americans that have created an entire mythology. You have [George] Lucas. You have the entire ‘Wizard of Oz’ mythology with Frank Baum. Jim is creating that with ‘Avatar’ and he’s going to take you places,” del Toro said.

This isn’t the first time del Toro has praised Cameron’s work. After watching “Avatar: The Way of Water,” he wrote that it was “a staggering achievement,” and added that it was “chock-full of majestic vistas and emotions at an epic, epic scale, a master at the peak of his powers.”

James Cameron has also been talking about the third movie, “Fire and Ash,” which is set to hit theaters on December 19.

Cameron has said he thinks it will be the best of the franchise and suggested it could be even longer than “The Way of Water,” which ran over three hours. He also revealed that his wife, Suzy Cameron, watched an early version last year and was so moved that she cried for nearly four hours.

Del Toro’s comments highlight the excitement around Cameron’s long-running franchise and show that even top filmmakers are impressed with the scope and ambition of the “Avatar” series.
