Disney+ To Adapt ‘Death Stranding’ As a Show: Here’s What We Know

Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding is coming to Disney+ as an animated series.

The announcement was made during Disney’s Asia Pacific content showcase in Hong Kong. Kojima revealed the series, titled Death Stranding Isolations (working title), is set to premiere in 2027.

Kojima, the creator behind the original video game, will serve as executive producer. The series will be directed by Takayuki Sano, known for his work on Bullet and the Gridman Universe. Concept art by Ilya Kuvshinov, who previously worked on Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045, was also unveiled at the event.

“The series will be pretty mind-blowing,” Kojima said through a translator. “I wanted to expand my franchise into anime because it allows me to do things you can only do with animation.” He added that the show will feature new characters and a story separate from the video games.

Kojima explained his decision to work with Disney, saying he has long admired the company and collaborated with them on the 2023 documentary Hideo Kojima: Connecting Worlds. “Disney approached me about the project while working together on the documentary,” he said. Kojima also wants the series to reach audiences who may not play video games. “I realized there are people who may never play the games, and I wanted to share the world of Death Stranding with more people.”

The animated series will use a traditional hand-drawn 2D animation style, with E&H Production, known for Ninja Kamui and Red Cat Ramen, handling production. Disney+ shared a brief synopsis of the series: “Set in the world of Death Stranding, Death Stranding Isolations will tell a completely new story. It will follow a young man and woman as they set out on an adventure.”

This expansion of the Death Stranding universe marks Kojima’s first animated project based on the franchise, and fans are already excited to see his unique vision translated into a new medium.
