Filmmaker Christopher Nolan is turning his attention to one of the oldest epic stories ever told, the poem The Odyssey by Homer. His new movie, titled The Odyssey, is an action‑fantasy retelling of the Greek king Odysseus’s long and dangerous trip home after the Trojan War.

In the film, Matt Damon plays Odysseus, trying to return to his wife, Penelope, and reclaim his kingdom.

The cast is huge. Among those joining Damon are Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, and Jon Bernthal, among others. The film is being produced by Nolan and his wife Emma Thomas under their company, Syncopy.

Universal Pictures announced the project in December 2024. Nolan reportedly started writing the script in March 2024 and by October had secured the deal with the studio. Damon was confirmed for the lead role in February 2025. Shooting began in February of this year and went on through August.

The locations spanned across Morocco, Greece, Italy, Scotland, Iceland, and Western Sahara. With a production budget estimated at around $250 million, it’s the most expensive film of Nolan’s career so far and marks his first time shooting entirely on IMAX 70 mm film cameras.

In the latest scoop, the Empire released a “new look” at the movie, showing exclusive artwork and giving fans their new glimpse at the scale of the project.
