Sony Pictures has started filming a live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda in Wellington, New Zealand.

Shooting began in November 2025 and is expected to continue for six months, wrapping up around April 2026.

While the recently leaked footage doesn’t show detailed sets, fans caught glimpses of costumes for the main characters, Link and Princess Zelda, which appear inspired by the popular Breath of the Wild game. Benjamin Evan Ainsworth plays Link, and Bo Bragason takes on the role of Princess Zelda.

The film is produced by Columbia Pictures and Nintendo, and it will be released worldwide by Sony Pictures Releasing. Wes Ball is directing, while Shigeru Miyamoto, Avi Arad, and Joe Hartwick Jr. are also serving as producers. The screenplay is written by Derek Connolly and T. S. Nowlin.

Before Bragason was cast, Patricia Summersett, the voice of Zelda in Breath of the Wild, had expressed interest in reprising her role for the film. Actress Hunter Schafer also showed interest in taking on the part. Ultimately, Bragason and Ainsworth were confirmed as the leads in July of this year.

The story is based on Nintendo’s long-running video game series, blending fantasy and adventure elements. Principal photography is taking place entirely in Wellington, with a worldwide release now set for May 7, 2027. The release was previously planned for March 26, 2027, but has been moved slightly later.
