Netflix’s New Epic Becomes Instant Hit, Fans Call It a Must-Watch Action Series
Netflix’s latest Japanese series, Last Samurai Standing, is quickly becoming a global hit. The show is a live-action adaptation of Shogo Imamura’s novel of the same name and is set in the late 19th century during Japan’s Meiji period.
It stars Junichi Okada, Yumia Fujisaki, and Kaya Kiyohara, and the story takes place mainly at the Tenryūji monastery in Kyoto.
The series made its first appearance at the 30th Busan International Film Festival on September 18, where the first two episodes were shown in the On Screen section. After the festival, all six episodes were released worldwide on Netflix on November 13. According to FlixPatrol, the show quickly climbed to the number one spot on the platform in many countries.

Last Samurai Standing is earning high praise from critics and viewers alike. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a 100% Tomatometer score based on eight reviews, and users on the site gave it a 96% rating.
Fans have been especially impressed with the series’ action and storytelling. One viewer said, “What a tremendous epic series, a tribute to the films of Kurosawa and many others! Audiences have also highlighted the depth of the story, noting how the main plot is supported by smaller, intertwined stories. One fan commented, “Great Samurai action, filled with several mini stories that interweave the main tale. Many relationships develop in a natural way, along with fantastic villain building. Love how the story gets on with things and doesn’t mind finishing business. Imagine the first three seasons of GOT packed into the first season! Can’t wait for more.”
The series has become a must-watch for action fans and anyone interested in samurai stories. Its combination of historical setting, strong performances, and engaging action has made it stand out in 2025.
