The movie is an adaptation of Homer’s famous Greek epic, following the legendary king Odysseus on his long and dangerous journey home after the Trojan War. Matt Damon plays Odysseus, while Anne Hathaway stars as his wife, Penelope.

Tom Holland takes on the role of Telemachus, Odysseus’s son. Zendaya appears as Athena, the goddess of wisdom, and Robert Pattinson plays Antinous, one of Penelope’s suitors. Other cast members include Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron as the witch-goddess Circe, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, Elliot Page, and several more.

Christopher Nolan started writing the film in March 2024 and got the project set up at Universal Pictures by October of that year. The movie was officially announced in December, and casting continued through late 2024. Matt Damon was confirmed for the lead role in February.

Filming ran from February to August across multiple countries, including Morocco, Greece, Italy, Scotland, Iceland, and Western Sahara. With a reported budget of $250 million, this is Nolan’s most expensive film to date and his first to be shot completely on IMAX 70mm film.

The story focuses on Odysseus as he faces mythical creatures like the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens, and Circe while trying to return to Penelope. Nolan described Odysseus as “an amazing strategist, [and] a very wily person” and said he was drawn to the character’s cleverness and inventiveness.

The Odyssey is scheduled to hit theaters in the United States on July 17, 2026, through Universal Pictures.
