The final season of Stranger Things is getting closer, and the creators want fans to prepare for an emotional ride. The Times in the U.K. spoke with Matt and Ross Duffer, and the two said season five will be the biggest chapter the show has ever had. They also hinted that viewers should expect one moment that will hit harder than anything seen before.

Matt Duffer explained that the new season will not be packed with nonstop violence, but one scene will stand out. He told The Times, “I would say season 5 is not as violent as season 4, but it has the most violent death of any season.” He added that they usually try not to make the battles too gory, though sometimes it is hard to avoid when the story demands it.

Ross Duffer said they always planned for the show to grow darker as the characters aged. He told The Times, “The goal was always to scale up each series with the age of the characters and our audience, but then we keep getting new audiences. Hopefully, parents don’t get too mad at us.”

Since this is the final chapter, the creators said their main goal was to make sure every character gets an ending that feels right. Matt explained that this mattered more than trying to guess what fans want. He said, “Every character’s ending needed to feel right. That was more important than providing the fans with the ending they’re hoping for.” He also mentioned that he does not follow online theories, adding, “I don’t even look online… I’m not actually even sure what people want to happen.”

Ross said the story is still about growing up, even with all the supernatural chaos. He shared, “At the end of the day, this is the final chapter in a coming-of-age story. How do you leave childhood behind? That’s one reason we created Vecna because he preys on all that uncertainty and anxiety. So the series is about how you overcome that.”

The new season takes place in the fall of 1987, one year after the events of season four. Netflix’s official synopsis says Hawkins is still damaged by the Rifts and that the group is now focused on finding and stopping Vecna, who has disappeared.

Stranger Things season five will be released in three parts on Netflix. Volume 1 arrives on November 26, Volume 2 comes out on December 25, and the final episode drops on December 31. All episodes will be available at 8 p.m. ET.
