Star Trek fans are getting an early look at one of the newest cast members of the upcoming spin-off, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.
WWE star Rebecca Quin, known to fans as Becky Lynch, has joined the series as a Starfleet officer in Operations Gold. Collider shared the first images of Quin on set, showing her as part of the bridge crew with a bob and blue streaks in her hair.
The series will feature Holly Hunter as Captain Ake, who also serves as Chancellor for the first post-Burn Starfleet Academy class. Returning Star Trek actors include Mary Wiseman as Sylvia Tilly, Tig Notaro as Jett Reno, Oded Fehr as Charles Vance, and Robert Picardo reprising his role as the Emergency Medical Holograph, the Doctor. The cast also includes newcomers Stephen Colbert, Bella Shepard, Zoë Steiner, George Hawkins, Karim Diane, Paul Giamatti, Tatiana Maslany, and Kerrice Brooks.
Quin spoke about her experience filming for the series and her childhood connection to Star Trek. “I’m on the bridge crew, and filming on the bridge, it was one of the most amazing sets I’ve ever been on,” she said.
She also recalled growing up in Ireland watching the franchise. “I grew up when Star Trek was one of the two shows that was on TV in Ireland… I did love the movies. And Colm Meaney. We all love Colm Meaney, any time he was on, you sit down and watch that.”
Created by Gaia Violo for Paramount+, Starfleet Academy is the 12th series in the Star Trek universe and part of Alex Kurtzman’s expanded Star Trek franchise. The show is set in the 32nd century, following the first new class of Starfleet cadets in over a century as they train to become officers. Cadets are played by Sandro Rosta, Karim Diané, Kerrice Brooks, George Hawkins, and Bella Shepard, alongside Hunter, Steiner, Picardo, Notaro, and Fehr.
