‘Shrek 5’ Expands Cast with Two New Stars
Exciting news for fans of the ogre franchise: Shrek 5 has added two new voices to its cast. Saturday Night Live’s Marcello Hernández and Skyler Gisondo, known for his role in Superman, will voice Shrek and Fiona’s sons, Fergus and Farkle.
They join the returning cast of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz as Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona. Zendaya is also part of the lineup, lending her voice to Shrek and Fiona’s daughter, Felicia.
The animated film is being produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Universal. It is scheduled to hit theaters on June 30, 2027.
The Shrek franchise has a long history. After the success of Shrek 2 in 2004, former DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg said the story was always planned as a five-film arc.
Shrek 3 and 4 revealed more of the story, and Shrek Forever After was intended to be the final chapter. Writer Josh Klausner said in 2010, “When I first came onto the project, it wasn’t supposed to be the final chapter — there were originally going to be five Shrek movies. Then, about a year into the development, Jeffrey Katzenberg decided that the story that we’d come up with was the right way for Shrek’s journey to end.”

Despite that, hints of a fifth film continued to appear. In 2014, Katzenberg suggested another chapter could be possible, saying, “We like to let them have a little bit of time to rest, but I think you can be confident that we’ll have another chapter in the Shrek series. We’re not finished, and more importantly, neither is he.”
The project gained momentum after NBCUniversal acquired DreamWorks Animation in 2016. Over the years, release dates were pushed back multiple times, with production officially starting in January 2024. DreamWorks announced the film for a June 30, 2027 release. Conrad Vernon, co-director of Shrek 2, is returning to direct alongside Walt Dohrn.
In February of this year, a teaser revealed Zendaya as Felicia, adding a new generation to Shrek and Fiona’s family. With the addition of Hernández and Gisondo as their sons, fans can expect a lively, multi-generational story filled with the humor and heart the franchise is known for.
