Mamoru Hosoda, one of Japan’s most acclaimed anime directors, is making his return to theaters with Scarlet, his first film in four years. The movie takes inspiration from Shakespeare’s Hamlet and combines action with a time-bending story.

Scarlet follows a princess from medieval times who is skilled with a sword and determined to avenge her father’s death.

During her quest, she suffers a serious injury and ends up in a strange, in-between world. There, she meets a young man from the present day who helps her heal and shows her a life beyond anger and revenge. “When confronted again by her father’s killer, Scarlet faces her most daunting battle: can she break the cycle of hatred and find meaning in life beyond revenge?” Sony Pictures Classics said in the official synopsis.

The voice cast includes Mana Ashida, Masaki Okada, and Kôji Yakusho. The film is produced by Yuichiro Saito, Toshimi Tanio, and Nozomu Takahashi.

Scarlet will debut in select IMAX theaters on February 6, 2026, and open nationwide on February 13. A trailer for the film has already been released, giving fans an early look at the animation and story.

Hosoda is known for films like Mirai and Belle, and Scarlet continues his trend of blending heartfelt emotion with imaginative visuals. The film explores themes of revenge, forgiveness, and personal growth through its adventurous storyline.
