Rian Johnson Warns the Biggest Sin in Star Wars Is “To Be Afraid of Doing Anything That Shakes It Up”
Rian Johnson, the director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, recently shared his thoughts on taking risks within the iconic franchise during an interview with Holo Files. J
ohnson emphasized that the biggest mistake in Star Wars is being afraid to shake things up. “The worst sin is to handle it with kid gloves. The worst sin is to be afraid of doing anything that shakes it up,” he said.
Johnson reflected on how every Star Wars movie, from The Empire Strikes Back onward, challenged expectations, stirred strong reactions from fans, and eventually became loved classics.
Johnson also explained his approach to The Last Jedi, acknowledging the backlash the film received. “Having grown up a Star Wars fan, I know that thing where something challenges it, and I know the recoil against that,” he said. The Last Jedi divided audiences, with some fans criticizing its humor, plot choices, or character development, while others appreciated its fresh take on the saga.
The reveal that Rey’s parents were ordinary individuals, rather than someone from the original trilogy, and the handling of Luke Skywalker’s character were especially controversial.
Critics noted that the film’s departure from fan theories and traditional expectations sparked intense debates, yet many viewers welcomed its bold storytelling, action sequences, and tonal shifts.
Emily St. James of Vox observed that while some fans felt betrayed, others embraced the change and enjoyed the film’s originality. Johnson’s comments underscore his belief that taking creative risks is essential for keeping Star Wars engaging and relevant.
