This Christmas, the animated biblical film David is expected to dominate the domestic box office. Projections claim the movie could earn between $23 million and $28 million in its opening weekend, potentially giving the studio its biggest launch ever and surpassing Sound of Freedom.

The film is also set to outgross popular animated titles like Zootopia 2 and SpongeBob, claiming the top spot for animation in the U.S. this holiday weekend.

For context, Zootopia 2 has been performing strongly, grossing $259 million in the U.S. and Canada and $878 million internationally as of December 14, for a total of $1.137 billion worldwide. The sequel exceeded initial projections during its opening weekend, including a massive performance in China, and reached $1 billion globally within just 17 days of release.

David is an animated biblical musical drama based on the story of David from the Book of Samuel in the Old Testament. The film follows a young Israelite shepherd, poet, and warrior destined to become the King of Israel.

He embarks on a journey to save his people from the Philistines and prove that true power comes from faith and freedom rather than kingship. The movie builds on the story introduced in the five-part miniseries Young David.

The film features voice performances from Phil Wickham as David, Brandon Engman as young David, Miri Mesika as David’s mother Nitzevet, Sloan Muldown and Ashley Boettcher as David’s sister Zeruiah, Mark Jacobson as Jonathan, Adam Michael Gold as King Saul, Asim Chaudhry as King Achish, Mick Wingert as Zaydel, Will de Renzy-Martin as Vaizatha, Lauren Daigle as Rebecca, and Kamran Nikhad as Goliath.

David is scheduled to hit theaters across the United States on December 19, giving families a chance to experience the story during the holiday season.
