Jerry Seinfeld Honors Rob Reiner Saying βHe Saved ‘Seinfeld’ From Cancellation
Jerry Seinfeld has paid a heartfelt tribute to Rob Reiner following the filmmakerβs tragic death, recalling how Reiner played a key role in saving Seinfeld from cancellation. The comedian shared a photo on Instagram on Monday, Dec. 15, showing himself with Rob and his father, the legendary Carl Reiner.
In the caption, Seinfeld acknowledged Reinerβs influence on his career, calling him one of the most important people in his professional life alongside co-creator Larry David and the late producer and manager George Shapiro. βOur show would have never happened without him,β Seinfeld wrote. βHe saw something no one else could. When nobody at the network liked the early episodes, he saved us from cancellation.β
Seinfeld, which aired from 1989 to 1998 and starred Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jason Alexander, Jerry Stiller, Wayne Knight, and Seinfeld himself, was produced by Reinerβs Castle Rock Entertainment.
Seinfeld reflected on working with Rob, describing it as surreal to collaborate with the son of Carl Reiner, one of the kindest figures in show business. βRob and Michele married right as our show was starting and they became an imprint for me of how itβs supposed to work, each one broadening the other. Their death, together, is impossibly sad,β he said.
Reiner had also shared his efforts to save the show during a 2016 interview on The Howard Stern Show. He recalled going to NBC executives, including Brandon Tartikoff, insisting that the network keep the series on air despite its slow start. βPlease, I promise you there’ll be stories. You can’t take this show off the air. It’s going to be one of the great shows you’ve ever had,β he said.
Rob Reiner, 78, and his wife Michele Singer Reiner, 68, were found dead in their Brentwood, California home on Dec. 14. Authorities say the couple were victims of an apparent homicide, with their son Nick Reiner, 32, arrested on murder charges. The bodies were reportedly discovered by their daughter, Romy. Nick Reiner is being held without bail as investigations continue.
This tribute from Seinfeld highlights the lasting impact Rob Reiner had on television and comedy. His belief in Seinfeld helped create one of the most iconic shows in history. Losing him is a tremendous blow to the entertainment world.
