Noah Schnapp Sends ‘Byler’ Fans into a Frenzy by Hinting at What’s to Come in the Finale
Noah Schnapp has left Stranger Things fans buzzing after he addressed questions about his character Will Byers and his friendship with Mike Wheeler, played by Finn Wolfhard. The topic of ‘Byler’, the fans’ nickname for the potential couple, was brought up during Schnapp’s appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen on December 16.
When Cohen asked, “What’s your reaction to everyone wanting Will and Mike to be together?” Schnapp, 21, looked visibly nervous.
“Oh man, are we live? Um,” he said. He went on to speak about the story’s representation of a queer kid in the ‘80s. “I think… I mean look, it’s like a real kind of authentic representation of a queer kid in the ‘80s. I’ve dealt with that myself, being in love with a friend and maybe they don’t love you back or they feel differently,” Schnapp explained. “I’m not gonna spoil anything but [showrunners] The Duffers close it really well.”
Schnapp confirmed he is happy with the series’ ending, although he and the cast have not yet seen the full finale. The ‘Byler’ storyline has long divided fans.
Some believe Will and Mike will eventually become a couple, while others think Will’s love for Mike, revealed in season four, will remain unrequited. The first four episodes of Stranger Things season five were released in late November, but they left the question unresolved.
Wolfhard has previously said it wouldn’t necessarily feel “earned” for the characters to become romantically involved. Schnapp’s latest comments, however, have sparked debate among fans. Some interpret his vague remarks as proof the friends might end up together, while others read them as confirmation that the love will remain one-sided.
Fans quickly took to social media to share their reactions. One YouTube commenter wrote, “OH BYLER IS SO ENDGAME Y’ALL.” Others noted Schnapp’s mention of unrequited love as a possible hint that Mike may not return Will’s feelings.
Some fans reassured others, saying his comments shouldn’t be overanalyzed: “Guys don’t freak out over Noah’s recent comment on Byler. First of all there’s nothing worrisome about it. He has to be tight-lipped… he can’t say s**t and yet he said ‘maybe’ he doesn’t love you back.”
A few suggested Schnapp might have been intentionally giving ambiguous answers to keep fans guessing. “People here actually believe Noah will spill spoiler of the ending???? He used to be a walking spoiler but recently he did a pretty good job giving ambiguous answers,” one fan wrote.
The next three episodes of Stranger Things season five will stream on Netflix on December 25 in the US and December 26 in the UK. The season finale is set for December 31 in the US and January 1 in the UK.
