Rob Reiner reportedly expressed fear of his son Nick just hours before he and his wife Michele were found dead, according to multiple sources.

At Conan O’Brien’s holiday party on December 13, the late director allegedly told an attendee that he was “petrified of [Nick]. I can’t believe I’m going to say this, but I’m afraid of my son. I think my own son can hurt me,” the Daily Mail reports.

The funeral for Rob, 78, and Michele, 70, was held on Monday at comedian Albert Brooks’ mansion in Los Angeles. Attendees included Billy Crystal and his wife Janice, as well as comedians Larry David, Bill Hader, and Conan O’Brien. A source at the service recalled that many guests were moved to tears by the story of Rob’s final words.

Sources said that the couple had been involved in a verbal altercation with Nick in the hours before their deaths. One lifelong family friend said, “They had had an argument at Conan’s holiday party, and Rob had been telling people that they’re scared for Nick and scared that his mental state was deteriorating.”

Witnesses at the party reported that Nick was acting erratically. “Nick was freaking everyone out, acting crazy, kept asking people if they were famous,” an insider told People. Another source told Us Weekly that his behavior was “creepy” during the event.

Rob and Michele Reiner were found stabbed to death at their Brentwood home on December 14. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner confirmed the cause of death as “multiple sharp force injuries” and ruled both deaths as homicides.

Nick Reiner was arrested later that evening and charged with two counts of first-degree murder. He made his first court appearance on Wednesday, with an arraignment set for January 7, 2026.

Nick Reiner, born in 1993, has an older brother, Jake, and a younger sister, Romy. He has a GED and did not attend college. Public reports and interviews have documented his long history of substance use, including heroin and cocaine, beginning in adolescence. He reportedly entered treatment 18 times as a teenager and had periods of homelessness.

In 2015, Nick co-wrote the film Being Charlie, inspired by his struggles with addiction and his relationship with his father. Rob Reiner directed the movie. Sources say that Nick began to reconnect with his father during the making of that film. At the time of his parents’ deaths, Nick was living with Rob and Michele.

This tragic story highlights long-standing family struggles that sadly ended in a violent way. It also shows how past issues with mental health and addiction can have devastating consequences. What do you think about the events surrounding the Reiner family? Share your thoughts in the comments.
