Boxing star Anthony Joshua was involved in a serious car accident in Nigeria that left two people dead. The crash happened around 11 a.m. local time on Monday on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, a busy highway. Joshua suffered minor injuries in the collision.

Reports from Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps said the accident involved a Lexus SUV, which Joshua was riding in, and a stationary truck. Joshua was one of four passengers in the Lexus, while his security team followed behind in a separate vehicle. Authorities said the Lexus was likely speeding and lost control during an overtaking maneuver before crashing.

The Federal Road Safety Corps explained, “The primary causes of the crash being excessive speed and wrongful overtaking constitute serious traffic violations and remain among the leading causes of fatal road crashes on Nigerian highways.”

Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed added, “On behalf of the entire management and staff of the Federal Road Safety Corps, [we] extend heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wish the injured victim, Anthony Joshua, a speedy recovery.” The speed limit on that section of the highway is 50 mph.

Eyewitnesses told Punch newspaper that Joshua was seated behind the driver, with three other passengers in the vehicle. They described how onlookers helped with the rescue before officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps arrived. Footage from the scene showed Joshua looking dazed and in pain, while the bodies of two victims were visible nearby.

Joshua’s camp confirmed that they are aware of the crash and are gathering further details. The incident comes just days after Joshua knocked out Jake Paul in Miami, a fight watched by over 30 million viewers on Netflix.

Joshua, 36, has family roots in Ogun State, Nigeria, and attended boarding school nearby before returning to Britain at age 12. A family member told the BBC, “We are hoping for his speedy recovery and also the people who passed away – I pray for the departed to rest in peace. He’s normally coming around for the new year. We haven’t seen him so we were expecting him.”
