Zack Snyder sparked a lot of attention this week after sharing a rare behind-the-scenes photo of Michael Shannon as General Zod.

The image was posted on Snyder’s Instagram and quickly spread among fans of Man of Steel and the DC films. Along with the photo, Snyder wrote “Michael Shannon understood Zod down to the bone”, praising the actor’s deep understanding of the character.

Michael Shannon first played Zod in Man of Steel, which introduced a darker and more serious version of Superman’s famous enemy. While Shannon did not appear alive in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, his character was still important to the story. Zod’s body was used by Lex Luthor to create Doomsday, a moment that shaped the film’s ending. Shannon later returned as Zod in The Flash, though those scenes took place in alternate timelines.

Before Shannon was cast, the role of Zod was almost played by Viggo Mortensen. In the end, Snyder chose Shannon, whose performance went in a very different direction from Terence Stamp’s classic version of the villain in Superman II from the 1980s. Shannon later spoke about this in an interview, saying “To follow Terence Stamp’s iconic performance in the original, it is daunting, but I just focused on one day at a time.”

In a separate interview with Screen Rant, Shannon made it clear that he has no hard feelings about stepping away from the role. He shared advice for whoever plays Zod next and encouraged them not to copy what came before.

“What Terence Stamp did was very different from what I did. It’s kind of like Shakespeare. There can be a lot of different Hamlets, and there can be a lot of different Zods. It’s not my property. It’s literally not my property. So, make it your own. That’s always the best thing to do.”

Shannon also explained that he never viewed Zod as a simple villain. In his eyes, Zod believed he was doing his duty and protecting his people. That mindset, he said, is similar to many roles he has played throughout his career. Another actor, he noted, could easily interpret Zod’s actions in a different way.

This approach lines up with how Zack Snyder has described the character. The director has previously explained that Zod saw no future where humans and Kryptonians could exist together. From his point of view, there was no compromise.

As Snyder put it, “Zod’s not wrong from his point of view, but also, there’s no really room for humans in this scenario that Zod’s presenting and he’s not gonna stop.” He added that Zod would fight until one side was gone, leaving Superman with no other choice.

Seeing Snyder revisit Zod through this new photo is a reminder of how much thought went into that character. It also shows why Michael Shannon’s version still stands out years later. It felt grounded, serious, and human in a strange way.
