The future of House of the Dragon is now much clearer. The show will not run for many years. According to the series creator, the story already has an end in sight.

Ryan Condal, the showrunner of the Game of Thrones prequel, recently spoke about the series on the Escape Hatch podcast.

During the conversation, he confirmed that the show is planned to end with its fourth season. Season 3 has already finished filming, and work on the final season is now moving forward.

Condal shared that Season 3 wrapped production in late October and is currently deep into post-production. At the same time, the writing team has already started working on Season 4. He made it clear that this will be the final chapter of the series.

“We’ve started the writing process for Season 4, which will be the last one,” Condal said on the podcast.

He also explained that knowing the end is coming has changed how the team feels about the work. With only one season left, everyone involved wants to give it their all and finish strong.

Condal talked openly about how demanding the show has been, especially because of the heavy visual effects work required to bring the dragons to life. Even so, he said this season felt rewarding in a special way.

“It was exhausting,” he said, adding that the work pushed him physically. But he also noted that his creative energy was high and that seeing early footage from Season 3 has made him feel excited and confident about what they’ve made.

The plan, according to Condal, is to fully tell the story of the Dance of the Dragons without stretching it out longer than needed. HBO appears to support this approach, allowing the series to end with a clear and complete vision.

Ending the show on its own terms could help it avoid the problems that come with dragging a story too long. A focused ending may also leave fans more satisfied. What do you think about House of the Dragon ending with Season 4? Share your thoughts in the comments.
