Actor Kiefer Sutherland has been arrested after allegedly assaulting and threatening a ride-share driver in Hollywood, police have said. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) stated that Sutherland entered a ride-share vehicle, physically assaulted the driver (the victim), and made criminal threats in an incident at 00:15 PST on Monday, January 12.

The victim was not injured in the incident, the LAPD added. Sutherland, 59, was released after paying a bond of $50,000 and is due to appear in court on February 2. The incident took place at the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue in Hollywood and remains under investigation by the LAPD’s Hollywood Division.

Sutherland is best known for his iconic role as special agent Jack Bauer on the Fox series 24, as well as his portrayal of the U.S. President in Designated Survivor. He is the son of the late Hollywood legend Donald Sutherland, who passed away in 2024. The actor has had several legal issues in the past, including a 48-day jail sentence in 2007 for driving under the influence and an assault arrest in 2009 where charges were later dropped.

Beyond his legal troubles, Sutherland has remained very active in the industry. He recently starred in Clint Eastwood’s 2024 courtroom drama Juror No. 2, playing the character Larry Lasker. The film, which follows a juror who realizes he may be connected to the crime he is judging, also stars Nicholas Hoult, Toni Collette, and J.K. Simmons.

In late 2025, Sutherland headlined the R-rated crime thriller Stone Cold Fox, directed by Sophie Tabet. He plays Sgt. Billy Breaker in the film, which also stars Kiernan Shipka and Krysten Ritter. Although it had a quiet theatrical release in November, the movie has recently become a major streaming hit on Netflix, climbing into the top five most-watched movies in the United States this week.

Sutherland also made a festive turn in December 2025 with the Sky Original holiday movie Tinsel Town. In this meta-comedy, he plays a fictionalized version of himself visiting a small town to help save a local pantomime production. The film was praised for its warmth and Sutherland’s willingness to poke fun at his own tough-guy image.
