Brad Pitt’s Blockbuster Hit Is Getting a Sequel, Producer Confirms
Brad Pitt’s blockbuster F1 is officially getting a sequel, producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed in an interview with the BBC. The announcement comes after months of speculation about whether the high-octane racing hit would continue on the big screen.
F1, which is co-produced by seven-time Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton, stars Pitt, 62, as veteran driver Sonny Hayes. In the film, Hayes makes a dramatic return to the Formula 1 grid with the fictional team APXGP after being away for years.
The movie, released last summer, grossed $630 million worldwide, making it Apple Original Films’ most successful theatrical release so far. It is also nominated for four Oscars this year, including best picture.
During Apple TV’s recent press day, the question of a sequel came up. Apple senior executive Eddie Cue read out a fan’s question, and Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali replied, stay tuned, adding that more information would come in the future.
Bruckheimer later confirmed to the BBC, saying, “We’re working on a sequel.” He did not share a release date or confirm whether Pitt would return as Hayes, but assured that he would be “of course” involved in casting decisions.
Bruckheimer also reflected on changes happening in Hollywood, including studio mergers, AI developments, and production challenges. He shared his optimism for the industry, telling the BBC, “When they say the theatres are dying, it’s because of us. Because we haven’t given things that people want to see.”
The production of F1 involved filming during the 2023 and 2024 Formula 1 seasons, capturing real race weekends, including the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. Bruckheimer said he was both surprised and delighted by the film’s awards recognition.
“It was a long journey to get the movie made because we had to endure a couple of strikes – but in the end, the movie entertained audiences around the world. I never worked with Brad Pitt before and it’s really a thrill to work with Brad,” he said.
Bruckheimer, who was last nominated at the Academy Awards for Top Gun: Maverick, also discussed his upcoming projects. He revealed that plans are in motion for Heat 2, another Days of Thunder film, a new Top Gun movie, and a Pirates of the Caribbean installment. He also teased a “very interesting” UFO project. “We’ve got a lot of things in the hopper. We’re just waiting for one of them to get a great script and get it made,” he added.
With F1 already a global hit and a sequel officially in the works, fans can expect more high-speed thrills from Bruckheimer and Pitt in the years ahead.
