‘The Matrix 5’ Back on Track? Drew Goddard Breaks Silence on Writing and Directing the Sequel
Warner Bros. is still moving ahead with a new chapter in The Matrix series. Even though fans have heard almost nothing for months, the project is not canceled.
Back in April 2024, the studio revealed that a fifth film was in development. Drew Goddard was announced as both writer and director. Since then, there were no casting updates and no story details. The silence led many to believe the sequel had quietly been dropped.
That changed after Goddard spoke with ScreenRant. He confirmed that the film is still active. He said, I’m in my writing cave writing. I don’t know how long I’ll be in that writing cave, but whenever I come out, I’ll have news to share. His comment makes it clear that the script is still in progress.
This will be the first Matrix movie not directed by the Wachowskis. The original trilogy, The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded, and The Matrix Revolutions, became a global hit and earned about $1.8 billion worldwide. The first film, released in 1999 and starring Keanu Reeves, is still widely seen as the strongest entry.
The most recent installment, The Matrix Resurrections in 2021, did not perform well at the box office. The film reportedly cost $190 million to produce but made only $37 million in the United States. Audience response was mixed. It received a B- grade from CinemaScore and holds a 63 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Many viewers were divided over its direction and tone.
Goddard brings a long resume to the project. He directed The Cabin in the Woods and Bad Times at the El Royale. He also wrote Cloverfield and World War Z. On television, he worked on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Alias, and Lost. In addition to The Matrix 5, he is writing Project Hail Mary and a western for director Ridley Scott.
The Wachowskis have not been announced as part of the new film. Their last project together was Jupiter Ascending in 2015. There is no sign they will return for this installment.
Right now, the next Matrix film remains in the writing stage. There is no release date and no confirmed cast. But according to Goddard’s own words, the project is alive.
The series needs a clear and focused vision after the last film divided fans. A new director could bring fresh energy, but expectations will be high. The first movie set a standard that is hard to match. What do you think? Should The Matrix continue, or should it have ended with the original trilogy? Share your thoughts in the comments.
