Harry Styles has sparked fan speculation with his newly released album, Disco All The Time. Kiss, Occasionally. Many listeners believe one song, Paint By Numbers, hints at his past relationship with director Olivia Wilde. Fans think the lyrics may reflect their 2021–2022 romance, which ended amid media attention and rumors.

In the song, Styles sings, “Holding the weight of the American children whose hearts you break / Was it a tragedy when you told her / I’m not even thirty-three?” Fans suggest the line about children could reference Wilde’s two kids, who she occasionally brought to Styles’ Love On Tour. They also think the age reference points to their 9-year age gap, which may have contributed to tensions in the relationship.

While Styles hasn’t confirmed the inspiration for the song, fans are interpreting it as a look back at that chapter of his life. In the opening verse, he reflects on fame, singing, “Oh, what a gift it is to be noticed / But it’s nothing to do with me.” The chorus adds, “It’s a lifetime of learning to paint by numbers / And watching the colors run,” giving the track a reflective and emotional tone.

Before the album dropped, Styles spoke to Apple Music’s Zane Lowe about his approach to writing. “I think it was about meeting some people, whatever level of trust to just spend time with someone and saying yes to things,” he explained.

He added that the album reflects lessons from friendships and relationships, emphasizing honesty and trust. “Being in friendships and watching people be in relationship to each other… why wouldn’t it be OK for you to be that version of yourself?” Styles said.

Styles met Wilde on the set of her film Don’t Worry Darling, which she directed. Their relationship began shortly after Wilde and her ex-fiancé Jason Sudeikis ended their engagement. Wilde has previously denied rumors that she left Sudeikis for Styles. “Our relationship was over long before I met Harry. Like any relationship that ends, it doesn’t end overnight,” she told Vanity Fair. She also described co-parenting during the pandemic and said that living separately was best for the children.

Since his breakup with Wilde, Styles dated Taylor Russell from 2023 to 2024 and has been linked to Zoë Kravitz. Despite moving on, fans are eager to analyze Styles’ lyrics for insight into his past relationships. Paint By Numbers seems to reflect his personal experiences with love, trust, and navigating fame.

This track shows Styles using his music to process past moments while giving fans a glimpse into his emotional world. It’s clear that, no matter what he confirms, listeners will continue to draw connections and interpret the lyrics in their own way.
