Madonna was spotted looking glamorous while enjoying a gondola ride in Venice with Julia Garner, the actress set to play her in an upcoming biopic. The pair are filming season two of the AppleTV+ series The Studio, and they shared the spotlight for a photo shoot on the city’s iconic canals over the weekend.

The Queen of Pop, 67, appeared camera-ready with full makeup and bright red lipstick highlighting her plump pout. Her blonde hair was styled in loose ringlets framing her face. Both Madonna and Garner wore coordinated black and white striped tops with black coats and blue jeans, while a film crew captured the shots.

Garner added a wide-brimmed hat with red trim, and Madonna accessorized with fingerless baby blue gloves and a black handbag.

This marks Madonna’s first major on-screen role in nearly two decades. Her last significant acting part was a voice role in the 2006 animated film Arthur and the Invisibles. She previously won a Golden Globe for her performance in the 1995 musical Evita, and her last live-action role listed on IMDb was a 2003 cameo in Will & Grace.

The Studio was co-created by Seth Rogen, who also stars as a stressed studio executive. The cast includes Ike Barinholtz, Chase Sui Wonders, and Kathryn Hahn. Madonna teased her involvement last week on Instagram with a photo of herself reviewing a script on a gondola, captioned: The Italian Job.

Garner will soon portray Madonna in a biopic about the pop icon. The project has faced delays, but Garner confirmed last September that it is moving forward. “I can’t say too much about it, but yes, it’s a work in progress,” she told W Magazine. Madonna has long pursued a biopic of her life, initially developing a project called Who’s That Girl in 2023 with Diablo Cody.

After focusing on her international Celebration tour, she returned to the project in 2024, writing most of it with Erin Cressida Wilson and selecting Garner for the lead. Madonna shared her struggles on Instagram, explaining: “After struggling for days in LA, listening to producers and agents tell me why I couldn’t make my film, I realized that everything in my life is going to be challenged… No easy rides for me. I guess I should be grateful… It forces me to think outside the box. I did not have a normal life. I cannot make this in the normal way.”

This Venice outing highlights Madonna’s continued presence in the entertainment world and her commitment to bringing her story to the screen.

From her iconic 1980s rise in Desperately Seeking Susan to now preparing for her biopic, Madonna continues to command attention both on-screen and off. Seeing her in Venice with Garner, it’s clear she’s still a force of style, confidence, and determination.
