Scarlett Johansson was seen filming intense scenes for the upcoming reboot of The Exorcist in New York City on Thursday. She was joined on set by two stunt doubles as she brought her character to life in a dramatic street chase.

The trio wore matching red sweaters and pink pajama bottoms for the sequence, which had Scarlett running through the streets holding a gun.

The actress, 41, went make-up free for the shoot and styled her blonde hair into a long braid, showing a very different look from her usual Hollywood glamour. She could be seen emerging from a house looking scared before giving chase. Between takes, Scarlett chatted with the crew as they prepared for each scene.

British actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, 48, was also filming on Thursday. He appeared strapped to a stretcher as paramedics carried him to an ambulance, highlighting the high stakes and dramatic moments the movie promises.

The film is directed, written, and produced by horror expert Mike Flanagan, who has described it as a bold, fresh take on the original story rather than a direct remake or sequel. Scarlett is said to play a mother facing a powerful supernatural threat, with Jacobi Jupe, known for his role in Hamnet, playing her son.

Other cast members include Rahul Kohli and Sasha Calle, who were spotted wearing props that hint at police or law enforcement roles, and stars such as John Leguizamo, Laurence Fishburne, Diane Lane, Carla Gugino, and Kate Siegel.

The project marks the seventh film in The Exorcist franchise and comes fifty years after the 1973 original, which became a cultural milestone, earning ten Oscar nominations and grossing $441 million worldwide. Unlike earlier attempts at continuing the series, this film is said to exist in the same universe but tells a new story. It is set to release on March 12, 2027.

The original Exorcist is famous for its intense production history, including accidents, injuries, and even rumored curses linked to the cast. Notable incidents included a fire that destroyed part of the set and injuries to Ellen Burstyn and Linda Blair, whose screams of real pain made it into the film. Other cast members passed away during or after filming, such as Vasiliki Maliaros and Jack MacGowran.

It’s exciting to see Scarlett take on such a demanding role and fully immerse herself in a horror story of this scale. With a strong cast and an experienced director, this reboot has the potential to be both chilling and compelling. What do you think about Scarlett leading the new Exorcist film?
