Dakota Johnson Opens Up About the Absurd Reason She Bombed an Audition
Dakota Johnson recently shared a story about a very strange experience she had during an early acting audition.
While she was promoting her new movie Splitsville on Hits Radio, she talked about how she once lost a role because she tried to be polite. When she went into a callback, she decided to introduce herself and shake hands with the people in the room.
The people running the audition did not like that she did this and gave her some surprising feedback. Johnson said, The feedback I got was that because I had gone and introduced myself and shook everyone’s hand is that I was pompous. That I was schmoozing, and I was full of myself. She was confused because she thought she was just showing basic respect. She explained, I didn’t get the job because they said that I was being cocky, but I just had manners… It was pretty crazy.
This experience is one of the reasons why she decided to start her own production company called TeaTime Pictures. She told Variety that she wanted to have more power over the movies she makes. In the past, she would sometimes see the final version of a film and feel like it was not what she signed up for. She said, Woah. That is not what I thought we were making.
Now that she is a producer, she makes sure that everyone on her movie sets feels like they are part of the team. She wants a kind workplace where people are happy to show up every day. She described her style of running a set by saying, It’s very much a no asshole policy. She thinks that when people feel invested in the project, they do a much better job.
Dakota Johnson failed an audition because she was deemed "cocky" and full of herself for shaking hands with everyone in the room.

Her latest movie Splitsville is a comedy about two couples and an open marriage. It stars Johnson along with Adria Arjona and Michael Angelo Covino. The movie was first seen at the Cannes Film Festival and has been a big part of her schedule lately. She has also been working on other projects, like a film called Daddio and an upcoming movie based on the book Verity.
Dakota Johnson has clearly learned a lot from her early days in Hollywood when things were more out of her control. By becoming a producer, she has made sure that she can protect her vision and the people she works with. She is now one of the most successful women in the industry because she decided to lead her own projects.
It is really weird to think that someone could get in trouble just for being nice and shaking hands. It sounds like that casting team was being way too hard on her for no reason. I think it is great that she used those bad experiences to create a better way of working for herself and others.
