‘Euphoria’ Boss Breaks Silence on Sydney Sweeney’s Controversial Dog Scene
The creator of “Euphoria,” Sam Levinson, is responding to strong backlash after a new storyline involving Sydney Sweeney’s character Cassie Howard sparked widespread criticism online.
The controversy began after the Season 3 premiere aired on HBO. In the episode, Cassie is shown starting an OnlyFans career. The scenes quickly spread on social media and led to a wave of negative reactions from viewers. Many people called the content disturbing and focused on the outfits used in the storyline, including costumes where the character is dressed like a baby and a dog.
Fans questioned the direction of the scene and whether it went too far.
Levinson spoke about the creative choices in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. He said the goal was to show a mix of humor and discomfort, while also breaking away from pure fantasy.
He explained, “[Cassie] has got her dog house and her little dog ears and the nose, and that has its own humor, but what makes the scene is the fact that her housekeeper is the one filming it.”
He also added, “What we wanted to always find is the other layer of absurdity that we’re able to tie into it so that we’re not too inside of her fantasy or illusion — the gag is to jump out, to break the wall.”
According to Levinson, the idea behind the scene was to avoid staying fully inside Cassie’s point of view and instead create a strange, mixed tone that shows both fantasy and reality at the same time.
The show’s director of photography, Marcell Rév, also spoke about the production choices. He explained that the team avoided modern-looking sets and instead used a mid-century style house. He said this was a deliberate choice to give the scene a slightly outdated and uncomfortable feel, rather than a polished modern look.
He described it as a “strange choice,” but said it opened more creative possibilities for filming.
Levinson also said the lighting and tone were designed to feel harsh and unsettling on purpose. He explained that OnlyFans culture can look attractive on the surface but also carries a more depressing reality underneath, which they wanted to reflect in the scene.
Even with these explanations, the reaction from viewers has been largely negative. Many social media users said they were shocked by the content and questioned the storyline. Some also criticized Sydney Sweeney for agreeing to the role and taking part in the scenes.
One viewer wrote, “Why did this girl accept the role? I mean, you’re worth too much — why be a toy for people like that? Why humiliate yourself so much for a [show]?”
Another said, “Disgusting, who could ever look at this?”
The storyline is part of the new season of “Euphoria,” which follows the characters several years after high school as they move into adulthood. Cassie’s arc now includes her relationship with Nate Jacobs, played by Jacob Elordi, along with her growing involvement in online content creation.
The dog costume used in the episode reportedly includes pieces linked to Sydney Sweeney’s own fashion line.
The show continues to release new episodes weekly on HBO.
This situation shows how divided audiences have become when it comes to modern TV storytelling. Some people see it as bold and artistic, while others see it as unnecessary shock value. It also raises a bigger question about where the line should be in television when it comes to s***** themes and controversial imagery.
