Fans of Middle-earth have a new update on The Rings of Power, and it is arriving sooner than many expected.

According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, the third season of the Prime Video series will not wait until 2027 as some early rumors suggested. Instead, the new season is now expected to arrive later in 2026. The report is based on information from a source close to the production.

The series has been one of Prime Video’s biggest titles, reaching a huge global audience of around 170 million viewers. It has also played a major role in bringing new subscribers to the streaming platform.

Season three will move the story forward in time. It takes place several years after the events of season two and will show a major shift in the timeline of Middle-earth. The focus will be on the War of the Elves and Sauron, a major conflict that leads into the rise of the One Ring.

The official story description explains that Sauron is working to create the One Ring. His goal is to gain full control and win the war for Middle-earth. This period happens before the events shown in the earlier Lord of the Rings films directed by Peter Jackson.

The show last aired new episodes in October 2024, which means there will be about a two-year gap between seasons. Production for season three started after the show was renewed in early 2025 and is currently underway in the UK at Shepperton Studios.

The cast is expected to return with familiar faces including Charlie Vickers as Sauron, Morfydd Clark as Galadriel, and Robert Aramayo as Elrond. New cast members have also joined the series, including Jamie Campbell Bower, Eddie Marsan, Andrew Richardson, Zubin Varla, and Adam Young. Their roles have not been revealed yet.

The showrunners J. D. Payne and Patrick McKay previously spoke about the upcoming season and teased that work was already in progress. They said, “We’re working on it. We’re cooking. Let us cook!”
