Director Joe Russo has revealed new details about the upcoming re-release of “Avengers: Endgame,” saying it will include new material that directly connects to the next big Marvel film, “Avengers: Doomsday.”

The update comes after Disney confirmed plans to bring the 2019 blockbuster back to theaters with additional footage. Russo, who co-directed the film with his brother Anthony Russo, explained that this is not just extra content or deleted scenes.

Instead, the new material is tied to the story of “Doomsday,” the next major entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He said the goal is to create a stronger link between the two films ahead of the upcoming release.

Joe Russo described the re-release as more than a simple return to cinemas. He said, “It’s critically important to re-release the movie, and, in fact, we’ll be re-releasing the film with footage that is set in the Doomsday story that we have added to Avengers: Endgame.”

He also explained that the new content is designed to help set up what comes next in the MCU, calling it a bridge between the two stories. According to him, the added footage is meant to guide audiences from the events of “Endgame” into the upcoming “Doomsday” film.

Russo said the re-release creates a rare opportunity to expand the story of characters introduced in earlier Marvel films. He added that it also helps continue their journey in a way that connects directly to the next chapter.

He noted, “It’s a critical companion story that is setup for what you’re gonna watch in December when you see Avengers: Doomsday.”

He also said the idea of re-releasing “Endgame” made sense because of how successful the film originally was, explaining that major releases like this are not always possible due to cost and planning.

“Avengers: Endgame” first released in 2019 and became one of the biggest films in history, earning nearly $2.8 billion worldwide. It concluded the storyline involving Thanos and the Infinity Stones and marked the end of the MCU’s Infinity Saga era.

Since then, Marvel has expanded its universe across many new films and streaming series, adding new characters and storylines across different timelines.

The re-release is expected to hit theaters in September, while “Avengers: Doomsday” is scheduled for release on December 18.

This move shows how Marvel is trying to tightly connect its older films with future storylines instead of treating them as separate chapters. It could make “Endgame” feel even more important, but it also risks confusing casual viewers who just want the original story. Do you think adding new footage to a classic movie improves the experience, or does it change something that should stay untouched? Share your thoughts in the comments.
