Planned DCU Film Faces Big Change, James Gunn Confirms
A planned movie in the new DC Universe is no longer moving forward the way fans expected. Director and DC Studios co-head James Gunn shared an update about The Authority, a project that had been announced early in the studio’s new lineup.
The film was meant to focus on a team of powerful characters known for using extreme methods to fix global problems. The group comes from Wildstorm comics, created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch, and was introduced as one of the more unique ideas for the DCU. However, after several years with little progress, Gunn has now explained why the project has slowed down.
Speaking directly to fans online, Gunn cleared up rumors about his involvement and the film’s status. He said, “Just a normal slip of the tongue. I would have never had time to do this and although I know this is a popular theory online I never had an intention of writing or directing The Authority. The script wasn’t quite there but more importantly it didn’t work in terms of the larger DCU both in terms of the story and practical concerns. Maybe some day. Not soon.”

This statement confirms that the movie is not currently moving ahead, though it has not been fully canceled. Gunn had previously described The Authority as one of the hardest DC projects to develop, and it now seems those challenges have delayed it further.
The update came after fans asked about the film on social media, where there had been ongoing speculation about its future. Gunn’s response made it clear that the project needs more time and a better fit within the wider DCU before it can move forward.
At the same time, Gunn shared positive updates about other projects. He confirmed that Booster Gold is still being worked on and said, “[Booster Gold] is in development. [Paradise Lost] is in extreme development.” This shows that while some plans are changing, other parts of the DCU are still active.
The focus for now appears to be building the universe step by step. Upcoming projects like Supergirl, set for release in June 2026, and Clayface later that year are expected to continue shaping the world before more complex team stories are introduced.
This delay could actually help the DCU in the long run. It may be better to build strong foundations with well-known characters before introducing a less familiar team like The Authority. That way, the story can feel more connected and easier to follow. What do you think about this update? Should The Authority movie happen later, or were you hoping to see it sooner?
