‘John Wick’ Spin-Off Movie Gets Major Production Update and New Teaser
The John Wick universe is expanding again, and the new spin-off film Caine has officially started production.
The film is titled From the World of John Wick: Caine and focuses on the character Caine, played by Donnie Yen. He is returning to the role after appearing in John Wick: Chapter 4. Yen is also directing the movie and helped develop the original story. The script is written by Robert Askins and Mattson Tomlin, based on an early story concept created by Yen alongside Chad Stahelski.
The story takes place after the events of John Wick: Chapter 4. It follows Caine after he is released from his ties to the High Table, the powerful assassin organization that controls much of the underworld in the franchise.
Donnie Yen is leading the cast again as Caine, while Rina Sawayama returns as Akira. The film is being made as a joint project between Lionsgate Films, Thunder Road Films, and 87Eleven Productions, with Lionsgate handling distribution.

Filming is currently underway in Europe, with additional shooting planned in Hong Kong later in the schedule. Reports also confirm that Markus Förderer is serving as the cinematographer for the film.
The idea for a Caine-focused movie has been in development for several years. Early discussions began after John Wick: Chapter 4, especially following the post-credits scene that hinted at future conflict between Caine and Akira. Producers and creators of the franchise have also mentioned multiple spin-off projects being explored as the John Wick universe continues to grow.
The project was later confirmed and greenlit by Lionsgate in 2025, with Donnie Yen officially stepping into the role of both star and director. The film is described as a modern-style action movie influenced by classic Hong Kong martial arts cinema.
Caine is now moving forward as one of the next major entries in the John Wick franchise, continuing the story after the events of Chapter 4.
This is a strong direction for the franchise because Donnie Yen was one of the standout parts of Chapter 4. Giving him his own movie feels like a natural move. What do you think about Caine getting a spin-off? Share your thoughts in the comments.
