There’s a new update about casting in the upcoming The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, and it involves how Viggo Mortensen feels about stepping away from one of his most famous roles.

Director Andy Serkis spoke about the situation during an appearance on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz. He addressed the decision to cast Jamie Dornan as Aragorn in the new film instead of Mortensen, who played the character in the original trilogy.

Serkis made it clear there’s no bad blood between them. He said, “I really, really don’t want to go into it right now because I do want to save that for, you know, further down the line.” He avoided going into full detail about casting choices, but he did share one important thing. “Other than that, we are thrilled that Jamie’s doing it. I mean, we’re, you know, we’re absolutely thrilled. And, by the way, so is Viggo.”

The new film will explore events before The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, focusing on the hunt for Gollum. Serkis is not only directing but also returning to play the character he made famous.

Several familiar faces are coming back as well. Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf, Elijah Wood is back as Frodo, and Lee Pace will again play Thranduil. New cast members include Kate Winslet and Leo Woodall, who are joining the story with new characters.

Serkis also talked about why this story matters. He explained that Gollum is one of the most complex characters created by J. R. R. Tolkien, and there is still more to explore. He said, “There is so much more to be dug out of this very complex character — the most, perhaps, complex character Tolkien wrote.” He added that the film will take a closer and more personal look at the character, calling it a “deep dive and psychological investigation.”

He also shared how the movie fits into the timeline. “I think there’s still a wealth of stuff to be got out of the character, and it sits very neatly between the ‘Hobbit’ trilogy and the ‘Lord of the Rings.’”

The movie is set to bring audiences back to Middle-earth in a more focused and character-driven way, while still connecting to the larger story fans already know.

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is currently scheduled to hit theaters on December 17, 2027.
