Nick Cannon is opening up about very different rules he has for his 15-year-old twins, Moroccan and Monroe, when it comes to dating.

During an appearance on The TMZ Podcast on Saturday, May 2, Cannon said he treats his son and daughter differently in this area. The twins share parents Nick Cannon and singer Mariah Carey.

Cannon admitted that he is more open when it comes to his son Moroccan dating. He said he has even supported it. But when it comes to Monroe, his stance is completely different.

He explained, “My son [Moroccan] has been dating, and I’ve allowed it, I encouraged it.” When asked about Monroe, he made it clear that the rules are not the same, responding, “No, absolutely not.”

Cannon said he understands it may sound like a double standard, but he believes there is a reason behind it. He added, “First of all, it’s absolutely a double standard… there is a difference when parenting a son and then when parenting a daughter.”

He went on to say he is more protective of Monroe because of outside risks and concerns he feels are specific to girls. He said, “I am more protective of my daughter because there [are] things out there that I have to protect my daughter from.”

Cannon also explained that he expects different emotional situations depending on which twin is involved. He said he believes his son would handle difficult situations differently than his daughter, and that plays into how he sets rules for them.

At one point he also spoke very strongly about protecting Monroe, saying, “If somebody puts their hands on my daughter, I’m going to jail.”

Despite his strict stance, Cannon said he is still trying to keep communication open with Monroe as she gets older. He mentioned that he is already thinking ahead to college and knows he cannot control everything forever.

He said, “Hopefully, we’re having these open conversations. My daughter tells me any and everything… I want you to have all the questions answered.”

Cannon’s comments came shortly after he and Mariah Carey celebrated the twins’ 15th birthday. He shared a throwback video online along with recent moments from a family trip to Six Flags Magic Mountain.

While the birthday post was light and celebratory, his podcast comments show a more serious and protective side when it comes to parenting his daughter compared to his son.
